Putting Tips From Dave Stockton

Dave Stockton Putting Tips

It’s great to watch a master putter at work, and who better than Dave Stockton to share with us the benefit of his many years of golfing wisdom.  I wish I felt confident enough to line the putt up, then pull the trigger without looking at the hole again. I guess that’s the difference between a master golfer and an average club golfer like me. There are some great putting tips in the video.

Enjoy.

Miniature Golf – Are There Any Putting Lessons To Be Had?

Playing a game of miniature golf with friends or family, some of whom might never have held a golf club before in their lives, can be a reality check for the seasoned golfer. In my case, perhaps I am not so competent at golf as I thought. Just because I play golf on the golf links does not mean I can transfer those skills easily to the game of miniature golf, as I proved to myself recently while on holiday.

My daughter fancies herself as being a bit useful with a putter so I took her on at miniature golf. Trying to sink those short putts in the same firm manner I use on the golf course proved to be really costly for me on some of those holes. The greens were so fast that I hardly touched the ball and it seemed to carry on rolling for ever. Yes, they were lightening fast.

Of course, success at mini golf is also about hitting the angles correctly. If you cannot identify with what this means, it is hitting solid objects at a certain spot so as to get the ball to go in the direction of the flagstick. It’s not that easy. It helps if you play snooker, pool or billiards as well because the same principles apply in certain situations in those games.

So what value does putting on lightening fast, artificial greens have to do with putting on the normal links golf greens? Quite a lot really. For one thing it taught me the importance of striking the ball firmly at the hole with the putter. OK, if you miss the hole, you are faced an even longer putt back. If you see this exercise as a confidence builder, then there is value to be had in playing miniature golf.

The moral of this?. Decide on your line. Decide how hard you are going to hit the ball. Play the putter confidently, every time. Keep that confidence every time you putt.

Golf Putting Tips – How To Stop Hitting Long Putts Short

Picture the scene if you will. You are playing a foursome competition, and it is your turn to play. You have to play the golf ball right from the front edge of the green, a shot of some twenty feet, and your partner tells you all you need to do is lay the ball close enough for him to hole the putt.

I think you know what happens next. Yes, that’s right. You just hit the putt six feet short, leaving your partner a knee trembler to half the hole.

I can’t count the number of times I have been in that situation on the golf course. And I tell you what, I feel I have let my partner down when it does happen. So what can be done about trying to improve your golf putting technique? Why not try the following golf putting drill?

The purpose of this golf putting drill is to teach you a sense of how hard to hit your putts over a given distance. If say, you find it hard to putt close to the hole from twenty five yards out, here’s what I do. Putt to an area of the practice green where there is no hole cut.

Place one golf ball about twenty five feet away from where you are standing. Now, without looking, hit fifteen balls as close as possible to the target ball. Try and putt each ball as close as you can get it to the target ball, but you must not look at the target as you putt the ball.

To remove any temptation to look, I sometimes blindfold myself with a towel. The object is twofold. First, to develop a feel for how hard you should be hitting the putts, and second, to perfect your putting stroke.

When you can hit all twelve golf balls within about three feet of the target ball, then its time to vary the putting distance, and do the same again.

This golf putting drill can be adapted to suit your own needs. What I do is start at about fifteen feet, then gradually increase the distance to twenty five feet.

I would aim to have all twelve golf balls finish closer to the target at fifteen feet away, than the ball at twenty five feet away, as this is what I would be trying to do on the golf course.

If you have the time, I recommend you try this putting drill not only on your home course, but especially on a golf course that you have never played before. It could save you several shots in your round of golf.

Golf Putting Tips – Try These Golf Putting Drills

Every golfer know the frustration of three putting on the green, and we all get annoyed with ourselves when we do it. The point is, golfers know that most of the time we can save shots by not three putting. None of us golfers wants to throw shots away needlessly,so any golf putting drills we can practice to help improve out putting will benefit our golf game as a whole.

The golf putting tips in this article train you to figure out how hard to hit the golf ball so as to leave you a holeable put. That is, to reckon on getting down in two from long range.

The first point to emphasise, is that the surfaces of greens vary enormously, depending on weather conditions and the type of grass you are putting on. If you know the greens you are practicing on, all well and good. If not, it is always time well spent getting used to the feel of the greens, just by hitting a few putts to judge the pace. You will quickly see whether they are fast or slow.

If you have not done this golf putting drill before, it is best to start on a fairly flat green. Hit a few balls from somewhere near the perimeter of the green, and see how many putts finish within what you consider to be a puttable distance from the hole. We are all of different golf abilities. Some golfers feel comfortable holing out from three feet, some need to be a little closer to the hole than that. I know I do.

If you choose three feet as your target, the object is to hit twenty balls and see how many finish within this chosen distance. When you try this golf putting drill you will soon realize it is not easy. But, if you practice it diligently, your putting will improve, because you will have gained confidence in distance putting.

If you find this golf putting drill too easy, try and introduce a sloping lie. This could be right to left, left to right, or simply straight up and down the slope. The best advice is to practice putting those long range puts you fear the most.

I know these golf putting tips have helped me to three put less than I did before.

Golf Tips – Putting Drills

This is one of the best golf putting drills I know. Why? Because few golfers would argue the putting stroke needs to flow smoothly. You see very few good golfers with a quick jerky putting action. Rather, the putter swing flows evenly and fluently. This golf tip on putting shows you how to learn this fluid swing.

When you line up your put, take your left hand off the club shaft completely, so that you are gripping the club with the right hand only. Try putting some golf balls using this one hand only. What you are trying to accomplish is a feel for the stroke. Don’t hold the putter too tightly.

Take the club back smoothly, in an unhurried way, bending the wrist as necessary. If you line up half a dozen balls and hit them about the same distance, you will soon start to benefit from this golf putting drill, and your confidence will grow as well. You will also benefit from learning to judge how hard to hit the ball for any given distance you are trying to put the ball.

I know from my own golf game, how easy it is to lapse into stabbing the golf shot, especially when the pressure is on to hole the put. You will still have the same nerves to contend with on the golf course, but this golf putting drill will better prepare you to judge distances better, and be more in control of your putter swing.

When you can successfully put a few golf balls at about the same distance so they finish close together, try gripping the putter with both hands to see the positive benefit from this golf putting drill for yourself.

I hope you have enjoyed this golf tip on putting.
